The Standard U.S. Business Card

The standard business card in the US is 3.5 inches wide by 2 inches tall. This is the size that fits every cardholder, wallet, and Rolodex slot. Unless you have a specific reason to go custom, this is the size to use.

When you set up your file, add ⅛ inch of bleed on all sides — making your actual document 3.75″ × 2.25″. Keep all important content (text, logos, phone numbers) at least ⅛ inch inside the trim line — that's your safe zone.

Common Business Card Sizes

Standard Horizontal — 3.5″ × 2″
The Standard

The default for almost every industry. Fits standard cardholders and wallet slots. If you're unsure, go with this.

Finished: 3.5″ × 2″  ·  File with bleed: 3.75″ × 2.25″
Standard Vertical — 2″ × 3.5″
Portrait Layout

Same dimensions, rotated 90°. Works well for designs with a strong vertical element — photography, tall logos, or stacked text layouts.

Finished: 2″ × 3.5″  ·  File with bleed: 2.25″ × 3.75″
Square — 2.5″ × 2.5″
Modern & Distinctive

A square card stands out in a stack. Popular with creative professionals, photographers, and brands that want a modern feel. Note: does not fit standard cardholders.

Finished: 2.5″ × 2.5″  ·  File with bleed: 2.75″ × 2.75″
Slim / Mini — 3.5″ × 1.5″
Compact

A narrower card with a sleek, minimal look. Works for appointment reminder cards, referral cards, or as a secondary card alongside a standard one.

Finished: 3.5″ × 1.5″  ·  File with bleed: 3.75″ × 1.75″
Folded — 3.5″ × 4″ (folds to 3.5″ × 2″)
Extra Space

A standard card that folds in half, giving you four printable panels. Useful for appointment cards, mini menus, service lists, or cards with a map.

Flat: 3.5″ × 4″  ·  Folded: 3.5″ × 2″  ·  File with bleed: 3.75″ × 4.25″

Rounded Corners

Rounded corners are a finishing option, not a size change. The card dimensions stay the same — we round the corners after printing and cutting. Standard radius is ⅛ inch (3 mm). Rounded corners give a softer, more modern feel and prevent corner dog-earing over time. Available on any card size.

Bleed, Trim & Safe Zone Explained

Three concepts control how your card is cut and what content is preserved:

ZoneWhat It IsMeasurement
Bleed area Extends beyond trim; gets cut off. Prevents white edges. ⅛″ beyond trim on all sides
Trim line Where the cutter lands. The final card edge. 3.5″ × 2″ (standard)
Safe zone Inner area where content is protected from cutting. ⅛″ inside trim on all sides

Your design should extend through the bleed area so there's no white edge after cutting. But all text, logos, and important details must stay inside the safe zone — at least ⅛ inch from the trim line on all sides. Anything between the trim and the safe zone might be slightly clipped depending on cutting tolerance.

Designing in Canva? Set your canvas to the finished size (3.5″ × 2″ for standard), then enable bleed in export settings. For Illustrator, set the document to the finished size and add 0.125″ bleed in Document Setup. See our PDF Export Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Choosing the Right Size

For most professionals and businesses: standard 3.5″ × 2″. Universal compatibility, no surprises.

If your brand identity is strongly vertical: use the vertical orientation — same size, just rotated.

If you want to stand out and don't need cardholder compatibility: consider the square format.

If you need extra content space (appointment slots, service lists, maps): go with the folded card.

If you want a secondary card or minimal aesthetics: the slim format works.

The paper stock and finish you choose also affect the impression your card makes. See our Business Card Paper & Finish Guide for help choosing between gloss, matte, uncoated, and specialty finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard business card size in the US?
The standard US business card is 3.5 inches wide by 2 inches tall (89 × 51 mm). This size fits all standard cardholders and wallets. When setting up your file for print, add ⅛ inch bleed on all sides, making the document 3.75″ × 2.25″.
What's the difference between finished size and file size?
Finished size is the final trimmed card — 3.5″ × 2″ for a standard card. File size includes the bleed area — the extra ⅛ inch on each side that gets cut off during trimming. Your file should be 3.75″ × 2.25″ so there's no white border after cutting.
Can I print a custom-shaped business card?
We can print rounded corners on any standard card size. For fully custom die-cut shapes, contact us to discuss your design. Keep in mind that custom shapes may not fit standard cardholders.
Do I need to include bleed on both sides of a double-sided card?
Yes. Each side of the card is a separate design file (or page), and each needs ⅛ inch bleed on all four edges. Both sides should be set to 3.75″ × 2.25″ for a standard card.
What paper weight should I use for business cards?
Most business cards are printed on 14 pt or 16 pt cardstock. 14 pt is the standard — roughly the thickness of a credit card. 16 pt is noticeably thicker and more premium. See our Paper Weight Guide for more detail on how thickness affects feel and durability.
